Range Day #3 Progress

Author:

Today was the third #RangeDay of the year! I’m pumped! Two months ago, I could barely graze a full-sized paper target at 15 yds with a 9mm. But today I was able to land every shot inside the target at 25 yds, including three consecutive shots inside the A-Zone on a USPSA practice target.

Flinch Targets

Started with dry fire for all the steps below. Then repeated all steps with live fire (slow, untimed).

  1. Five 1/2″ flinch targets at 3 yd
  2. Five 1/2″ flinch targets at 5 yd
  3. Five 1/2″ flinch targets at 3 yd (both eyes fully open)
  4. Five 1/2″ flinch targets at 5 yd (both eyes fully open)
  5. Five 1/2″ flinch targets at 7 yd

Accuracy Practice at 25 yds

Started with dry fire, then repeated with live fire (slow, untimed). I got three rounds in the A-zone and two in C.

  1. Five rounds on a 23″x35″ target at 25 yds

Speed Practice at 25 yds

Again, started with dry fire, then repeated with live fire. This time, I used a timer app that beeped every 2-4 seconds and shot one round every beep. These were worse than the slow rounds, but I was still able to get one round in the A-Zone, two in C, and two in D.

More accuracy practice

I then worked on a 12″x18″ SplatterBurst target. Did a big of dry fire at 5 yds, then shot different zones at different distances. These were also timed (one shot per beep). I’d say my groupings were okay and need to improve.

  1. Five rounds at 5 yd
  2. Five rounds at 7 yd
  3. Five rounds at 10 yd
  4. Five rounds at 15 yd

Presenting, Aiming, and Reloading Practice

After that, I did drills from Ben Stoeger’s DryFire Reloaded. Drills involved setting sights on targets, switching targets, reloading magazines, etc. I did these without pulling the trigger first, then dry firing, and finally repeated them with live fire.

Basically, I kept repeating the drills I needed to work on, or tried new ones from the book for about 2 hours. Finally, to unwind, I magdumped my other firearms on another SplatterBurst target. All in all, I shot 200 rounds off my P365X-Macro. About 50 of those were slow (untimed) and the rest were timed.
